Code
1. Read, read, read the forums like http://knx-user-forum.de
2. Do a rough planning of what you want to connect – think about cables/connection to actor/sensors!!
a. Roller
b. Light
c. Presence sensors
d. Heating system
e. Outside light sensors
f. Humidity sensors
g. Power consumption sensors
3. Reevaluate if KNX is what you want (expensive but flexible & “standard”)
a. Check if you need gateways
i. IP Gateway (nowadays 99%)
ii. WireGate? Depending on number of sensors and cabling
b. Home server and visualization required?
4. Check again which components you would by and price/availability
5. If you decided to proceed buy a test system
a. Small power distribution box – Hager Volta 2 o smaller
b. Power supply 320/640mA – MDT 640mA
c. IP Router (if connected via IP which is most likely) – Siemens IP Router
d. Switching actuator – MDT 2x UP
e. Sensor like a push button for light switching etc. – MDT 4x
f. ETS4 (demo for very first step but at least light is required)
g. PC with Windows Vista/7 (8 is not supported yet)
h. Argh I – forgot of course the nice green bus cable and maybe CAT5 LAN cable
i. Argh II – don’t forget WAGO connectors 243-211 (red/black) for BUS & 243-212 (yellow/white) for Power or replacement of red/black in case of cable is broken
6. Think and understand KNX addressing
a. Area, lines (physical topology) – using cables & area/line coupler
b. Physical addresses – physical address for each sensor/actuator
c. Group addresses (logical) – needed to address telegrams to the right receiver/receiver group
